Quick tips for a good skin

Quick tips for a good skin

No matter how hard we try, our skin is always venerable to many problems. So, here is few tips you can do to keep your skin healthy:

1. Skin is best when its hydrated. The only way to do so, is drink water. At least 5 litres of water should be consumed daily for a good skin. You can also put on moisturizer for this purpose but drinking water is the best thing to do.

2. Wash your face twice daily, specially before bed. It helps to wash away your makeup which can actually block your pores resulting pimples.

3. Stay away from sun. The UV rays are last thing you want to deal with. But if you need to walk in sun, wear a sunblock with effective SPF factor. You can also put on a mixture of Aloe Vera pulp and Lemon for 15 mins to lower the effect of UV rays.

4. Eat a balanced diet if you can with less oil and of course less spices.
Never ever pop or squeeze pimples, it may leave a permanent mark on your skin.

5. If you wear specs or sunglasses, frequently clean them for cleaning the oil they carry which might block your pores.

6. Sleep is one good thing for your skin. You should get a sound sleep else you may have some dark rings and wrinkles around your eyes.

Pimples: Causes and Solutions

Pimples, something that everyone are a victim of. There might rarely be any people who never had this problem. It usually appears as  a spot or inflammation. which is affected with bacteria and is filled with pus.
Pimples are caused when the sebaceous glands located at the base of hair follicles become overactive; the most vulnerable parts of the body are the face, back, chest and shoulders.

Wondering the CAUSES:
The sebaceous glands, which produce sebum, exist inside the pores of our skin. The outer layers of our skin are being shed continuously. So, it sometimes happens that the dead skin cells are left behind  stuck together by the sticky sebum, causing a blockage in the pore. Pore blockage is more likely to occur during adolescence. More sebum is produced by the sebaceous gland but since the pore is blocked, it accumulates behind the blockage.

This accumulated and blocked sebum has bacteria, including Propionibacterium acnes; this slow-growing bacterium is linked to acne. Propionibacterium acnes generally exists harmlessly on our skin - however, when the conditions are right, it can reproduce more rapidly and become a problem. The bacterium feeds off the sebum and produces a substance that causes an immune response, leading to inflammation of the skin and spots.

The skin of people who are prone to pimples are especially sensitive to normal blood levels of testosterone - a natural hormone found in both males and females. In such people the testosterone can make the sebaceous glands produce too much sebum, making the clogging up of dead skin cells more likely, which in turn increases the probability of blocking the pores, etc. But of course, you cannot catch pimples from another person.

It is also believed that pimples are caused by unhealthy diet. Lack of water is also a cause. and in some cases it is inherited too.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF PIMPLES:

  • Whiteheads: These are very small and remain under the skin, appearing as a small, flesh-colored papules. If u squeeze them, white pus appers. But squeezing should be avoided.
  • Blackheads :These are clearly visible, they are black and appear on the surface of the skin.
  • Papules : these are small, solid, rounded bumps that rise from the skin. The bumps are often pink.
  • Pustules : these are pimples full of pus. They are clearly visible on the surface of the skin. The base is red and the pus is on the top.

IS IT COMMON?

Well it is obviously common. More than 80% of teenagers get pimple. But is found more common in boys.
And it is most venerable at the age of 16-19.

   Even your Stars suffer......

USEFUL METHODS TO TREAT PIMPLES:

  • Washing face twice a day helps to wash off the shedding skin and removes chances of pores being blocked. Face should be washed using a face wash with benzoyl peroxide.
  • Herbal Methods are also there.
  • Never squeeze pop or scratch your pimples. They might work but sometimes you may be pron to getting Infections. They result in severe swelling and you may even require pills.

  • Water....H2O all the way. Drink a lot of water, it keeps your skin in great condition.
  • Hygiene, its one important thing.
  • You should always remove your make up while sleeping. The chemicals in your product, they result in pimples too.
  • Overexposure to sunlight may sometimes result in the production of more sebum. Some medications used by people with acne may make your skin more prone to sunburn.

KERATOSIS PILARIS: Causes and Solutions

KERATOSIS PILARIS

Small, pimple-like bumps are usually the result of a benign skin condition known as keratosis pilaris. According to Medline Plus, keratosis pilaris causes small bumps that almost resemble goosebumps. Although keratosis pilaris can occur at any age, it usually begins in childhood or adolescence and typically disappears as you get older.Keratosis pilaris (KP, also follicular keratosis) is a very common genetic follicular condition that is
manifested by the appearance of rough bumps on the skin, hence ref

erred to as chicken
skin. It most often appears on the back and outer sides of the upper arms (though the lower
arms can also be affected), and can also occur on the thighs and tops of legs, flanks,
buttocks, or any body part except glabrous skin (like the palms or soles of feet). Less
commonly, lesions appear on the face, which may be mistaken for acne.

According to Medline Plus, the main feature of keratosis pilaris is the appearance of small,
hard bumps that form within the openings of your hair follicles. These bumps are the
result of a buildup of keratin, a hard protein manufactured by your skin. The bumps most
commonly occur on your arms, buttocks and thighs and in some cases, the bumps can
appear on your face. The bumps are usually white and no larger than a sugar granule.
Sometimes, the bumps can appear pinkish or red on the outer edges.

Treatments

Treatments that are used for keratosis pilaris focus on improving the texture of your skin. According to Medline Plus, treatments include the use of creams and gels containing ingredients such as urea, lactic acid, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, tretinoin, or vitamin D to help moisturize and soften your skin. You can also use petroleum jelly or cold cream, according to the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. The condition will most likely return once you stop using the treatment. There's no cure for keratosis pilaris, although it usually goes away on its own as you get older.

There is no cure for Keratosis pilaris, but treatment is available. One option is to use a
loofa to remove the dead, dry skin. Another option is to use a dermotologist-prescribed cream or lotion that should be applied daily. The best lotions for this condition would have urea, 15% alphahydroxy acids, or Retin A in them. Over-the-counter lotions work as well
and should be applied after showering, as well as several times a day. The lotions are often soothing and can help improve the appearance of the skin. Dermotologists also recommend mild peeling agents, or alpha hydroxy acids, that may open up the plugged follicles. Antibiotics may also help in some cases where the bumps are red and badly inflamed. To temporarily reduce redness but not roughness, pulse dye laser treatment or intense pulsed light (IPL) can be done.

Although it may clear up with treatment, reccurance of KP is very likely. Therefore, treatment should be continued regularly. It may take several months to years for the condition to completely clear up.
A dermotologist or physician can usually diagnose a patient for Keratosis pilaris by visually inspecting the patient's skin.

Hair Loss: Causes and Solutions

Hair Loss:
Our hair is made of a type of protein called keratin. A single hair consists of a hair shaft (the part that shows), a root below the skin, and a follicle, from which the hair root grows. At the lower end of the follicle is the hair bulb, where the hair's color pigment, or melanin, is produced.
The normal cycle of hair growth lasts for 2 to 3 years. Each hair grows approximately 1 centimeter per month during this phase. About 90 percent of the hair on your scalp is growing at any one time. About 10 percent of the hair on your scalp, at any one time, is in a resting phase. After 3 to 4 months, the resting hair falls out and new hair starts to grow in its place.
It is normal to shed some hair each day as part of this cycle. Most people lose about 50 to 100 head hairs a day. These hairs are replaced — they grow back in the same follicle on your head. This amount of hair loss is totally normal and no cause for worry. If you're losing more than that, though, something might be wrong.

What causes excessive hair loss?

A number of things can cause excessive hair loss. For example, about 3 or 4 months after an illness or a major surgery, you may suddenly lose a large amount of hair. This hair loss is related to the stress of the illness and is temporary.

Hormonal problems may cause hair loss. If your thyroid gland is overactive or underactive, your hair may fall out. This hair loss usually can be helped by treatment thyroid disease. Hair loss may occur if male or female hormones, known as androgens and estrogens, are out of balance. Correcting the hormone imbalance may stop your hair loss.

Many women notice hair loss about 3 months after they've had a baby. This loss is also related to hormones. During pregnancy, high levels of certain hormones cause the body to keep hair that would normally fall out. When the hormones return to pre-pregnancy levels, that hair falls out and the normal cycle of growth and loss starts again.

Some medicines can cause hair loss. This type of hair loss improves when you stop taking the medicine. Medicines that can cause hair loss include blood thinners (also called anticoagulants), medicines used for gout, high blood pressure or heart problems, vitamin A (if too much is taken), birth control pills and antidepressants.

Certain infections can cause hair loss. Fungal infections of the scalp can cause hair loss in children. The infection is easily treated with antifungal medicines.

Finally, hair loss may occur as part of an underlying disease, such as lupus or diabetes. Since hair loss may be an early sign of a disease, it is important to find the cause so that it can be treated.

And of course, it is inherited from parents too.

There are other Conditions as well, they are:

Androgenetic Alopecia - male (L) and female (R) - possiblly helped with special hair growth products.

Alopecia Areata - In this type of hair loss, hair usually falls out, resulting in totally smooth, round patches about the size of a coin or larger. It can, rarely, result in complete loss of scalp and body hair. This disease may affect children or adults of any age. The cause of alopecia areata is unknown. Apart from the hair loss, affected persons are generally in excellent health. In most cases, the hair regrows by itself. Dermatologists can treat many people with this condition. Treatments include topical medications, a special kind of light treatment, or in some cases hair vitamins.

AlopeciaAreata Childbirth - When a women is pregnant, more of her hairs will be growing. However, after a woman delivers her baby, many hairs enter the resting phase of the hair cycle. Within two to three months, some women will notice large amounts of hair coming out in their brushes and combs. This can last one to six months, but resolves completely in most cases.

High Fever, Severe Infection, Severe Flu - Illnesses may cause hairs to enter the resting phase. Four weeks to three months after a high fever, severe illness or infection, a person may be shocked to see a lot of hair falling out. This shedding usually corrects itself.

Thyroid Disease - Both an over-active thyroid and an under-active thyroid can cause hair loss. Your physician can diagnosis thyroid disease with laboratory tests. Hair loss associated with thyroid disease can be reversed with proper treatment.

Inadequate Protein in Diet - Some people who go on crash diets that are low in protein, or have severely abnormal eating habits, may develop protein malnutrition. The body will save protein by shifting growing hairs into the resting phase. Massive hair shedding can occur two to three months later. Hair can then be pulled out by the roots fairly easily. This condition can be reversed and prevented by eating the proper amount of protein and, when dieting, maintaining adequate protein intake.

Hair Pulling (Trichotillomania)
 - Children and sometimes adults will twist or pull their hair, brows or lashes until they come out. In children especially, this is often just a bad habit that gets better when the harmful effects of that habit are explained. Sometimes hair pulling can be a coping response to unpleasant stresses and occasionally is a sign of a serious problem needing the help of a mental health professional.

Medications - Some prescription drugs may cause temporary hair shedding. Examples include some of the medicines used for the following: gout, arthritis, depression, heart problems, high blood pressure, or blood thinner. High doses of vitamin A may also cause hair shedding.

Cancer Treatments - Some cancer treatments will cause hair cells to stop dividing. Hairs become thin and break off as they exit the scalp. This occurs one to three weeks after the treatment. Patients can lose up to 90 percent of their scalp hair. The hair will regrow after treatment ends. Patients may want to get wigs before treatment.

Birth Control Pills - Women who lose hair while taking birth control pills usually have an inherited tendency for hair thinning. If hair thinning occurs, a woman can consult her gynecologist about switching to another birth control pill. When a women stops using oral contraceptives, she may notice that her hair begins shedding two or three months later. This may continue for six months when it usually stops. This is similar to hair loss after the birth of a child.

Low Serum Iron - Iron deficiency occasionally produces hair loss. Some people don't have enough iron in their diets or may not fully absorb iron. Women who have heavy menstrual periods may develop iron deficiency. Low iron can be detected by laboratory tests and can be corrected by taking iron pills.

Itchy scalp may cause mild but reversible hair loss. Cause maybe  dandruff or other other things. Its treatments may include medicated shampoos  and topical cortisone creams and lotions to help decrease itching.

Major Surgery/Chronic Illness - Anyone who has a major operation may notice increased hair shedding within one to three months afterwards. The condition reverses itself within a few months but people who have a severe chronic illness may shed hair indefinitely.

Fungus Infection (Ringworm) of the Scalp - Caused by a fungus infection, ringworm (which has nothing to do with worms) begins with small patches of scaling that can spread and result in broken hair, redness, swelling, and even oozing. This contagious disease is most common in children and oral medication will cure it.

Is there any treatment for hair loss?

Depending on your type of hair loss, treatments are available. If a medicine is causing your hair loss, your doctor may be able to prescribe a different medicine. Recognizing and treating an infection may help stop the hair loss. Correcting a hormone imbalance may prevent further hair loss.

Medicines may also help slow or prevent the development of common baldness. One medicine, minoxidil (brand name: Rogaine), is available without a prescription. It is applied to the scalp. Both men and women can use it. Another medicine, finasteride, is available with a prescription. It comes in pills and is only for men. It may take up to 6 months before you can tell if one of these medicines is working.

If adequate treatment is not available for your type of hair loss, you may consider trying different hairstyles or wigs, hairpieces, hair weaves or artificial hair replacement.

On herbal side, you can apply garlic paste to your scalp. In a few days or a week, you will see hair emerging out. Continue applying the paste for a better result.

Also you can rub your finger nails of your two hands against each other. It is a ancient form of yoga to improve your hair.

Experts say vitamins, herbs, even diet can help to cope with hair loss.  :)

Surgery or hair transplants: Surgical hair restoration approaches include various versions of hair transplantation (taking hair from the back and putting it near the front) or scalp reduction (cutting away bald areas and stitching the rest together). Transplant procedures have improved greatly in recent years. They can produce much more attractive and natural-looking results than older methods that sometimes leave a "checkerboard" or hair plug look. Many transplant patients now take Propecia to maintain or keep what they've transplanted. When considering a hair transplant, check the surgeon's credentials and experience carefully. Micrografts are some of the newest techniques whereby single one to two hair follicles are transplanted. Hair transplants may be very expensive and time-consuming procedures ranging widely anywhere from $1000-$20,000, depending on the number of hair grafts transplanted. Typically 500 or more hairs may be transplanted in a session.
